Furniture disposal means getting rid of items you are not keeping — a sofa, a wardrobe, a mattress, a table — either as part of a house move or as a standalone job. It is a separate service from moving your kept items, even when the same [movers](/movers) provider does both. Getting a clean quote for it starts with being specific about what is actually leaving the flat.

## What to check first

List what needs to go, with rough size and quantity. "A few old pieces" is not something a provider can price; "one three-seater sofa, one queen mattress, one wardrobe" is.

Check whether it is tied to a move or standalone. If you are moving, decide whether disposal happens before the move, on moving day itself, or after you have settled into the new place — each changes what the movers provider needs to plan for.

Check your town council's bulky-item collection service if you are not moving. For a single item with no move attached, this is often available at lower cost than booking a full movers provider.

## Why furniture needs disposing

**A move (most common).** The most common reason furniture needs disposing is a move — you are downsizing, replacing pieces, or the new place does not fit what you have. This is why disposal is usually asked for as a line item on a house-move quote rather than booked on its own.

**A straight replacement.** The second reason is a straight replacement, with no move involved — old furniture swapped for new, and the old piece needs to leave the flat. This is smaller in scope than a house move and is often cheaper to route through your town council instead of a movers provider.

**Accumulated bulky waste.** The third reason is bulky waste that has built up over time — items kept "in case", now taking up space.

## When to call, and who

If you are already booking a house move, ask the movers provider to quote disposal as a separate line item rather than assuming it is bundled in. If you are not moving, check your town council's bulky-item collection service before booking a movers provider for disposal alone — it is often the cheaper route for a single item.

Call a movers provider when the volume is too large for a town council collection, when timing needs to line up exactly with a move, or when the items need to be carried down from a high floor rather than left at a collection point.

For a single bulky item with no move attached, NEA's own guidance for private estates is to contact the Public Waste Collector serving the estate or engage any licensed waste collector directly; for HDB flats, NEA directs residents to contact their Town Council instead. A movers provider is one option for disposal, not the only one.

Town council bulky-item services vary but are usually free or low-cost. Ang Mo Kio Town Council, for example, offers a free bulky-item removal service once a month for HDB residents in its area — the first 3 items are free, further items are charged a nominal fee, and each item must not exceed 2.1m by 0.9m. Check your own town council's site for its equivalent, since terms differ by council.

A Public Waste Collector is one of a small number of companies NEA appoints to handle residential and trade waste collection for a specific area — 800 Super, for example, is appointed for the Ang Mo Kio-Toa Payoh and Pasir Ris-Bedok sectors. Which one serves you depends on where you live, so check with your estate or town council rather than assuming any waste collector qualifies.

## What it costs

Ask two or three for a written quote instead.

Before booking, list exactly what needs disposing — item type, size, and quantity — and whether it needs to leave before, during or after the move. A provider quoting "disposal included" with no itemised list is not quoting a job you can hold them to.

Ask whether disposal is billed per item, per truckload, or folded into the overall move price, and whether there is an extra charge for carrying items down from a high floor with no lift access at the right size.

## Who to call, and how to judge them

Judge a movers provider on ACRA registration, a written itemised quote, and reviews you can verify.

An ACRA registration confirms the business exists, nothing more. A movers provider doing disposal as part of a house move typically confirms the item list on arrival, separates what is kept from what is disposed, and bills disposal either per item or per truckload, depending on volume.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is furniture disposal included when I book a house move?**

Furniture disposal means getting rid of items you are not keeping — a sofa, a wardrobe, a mattress, a table — either as part of a house move or as a standalone job. It is a separate service from moving your kept items, even when the same movers provider does both.

**Is it cheaper to use my town council instead of a movers provider?**

The second reason is a straight replacement, with no move involved — old furniture swapped for new, and the old piece needs to leave the flat. This is smaller in scope than a house move and is often cheaper to route through your town council instead of a movers provider.

**What should I tell a provider before they quote?**

Before booking, list exactly what needs disposing — item type, size, and quantity — and whether it needs to leave before, during or after the move. A provider quoting "disposal included" with no itemised list is not quoting a job you can hold them to.
