A [washing machine](/guides/washing-machine-repair-or-replace) that has stopped working in Singapore is usually one of three things: a blocked drain filter or kinked hose stopping it from draining, a loose or damaged water hose causing a leak, or too much detergent triggering a suds overload. Each shows up differently and each has its own fix.

## What to check first

Before calling a technician, check and clear the drain filter (usually a small hatch at the front-bottom of the machine), check that both hoses at the back are firmly connected and undamaged, and check whether you have been using more detergent than the load size calls for.

Note the exact error code on the display, if there is one, before you call. A technician can often tell you over the phone whether it is a simple fix or a visit is needed once they have the code.

Run an empty cycle with no detergent after clearing the filter, if the machine still turns on. If it drains and spins normally with nothing in it, the fault was almost certainly the filter or the load, not the machine itself.

## The likely causes, in order

**A blocked drain filter or kinked hose (most common).** A blocked drain filter or kinked drain tube is the most common cause of a machine that stops mid-cycle. Samsung's guidance on the 5C/5E drain error states that the most common reason for this error is a blocked filter or a kinked drain tube, and recommends ensuring that the filter and drain tube are cleared regularly to remove any blockages.

**A loose or damaged water hose (second).** A loose or damaged water hose is the second cause, and it shows up as a leak rather than a stopped cycle. Samsung's leak guidance says to check the water supply hoses in the back to make sure they're connected right and in good condition; a leak doesn't automatically mean the machine requires servicing. A reconnected or replaced hose sometimes solves it outright, and you do not need to wait for a licensed plumber to try it. Reconnecting or replacing the hose to a washing machine is simple plumbing work in Singapore, not licensed work. PUB's Plumbing Works page lists replacing or removing a connecting hose to a washing machine or a dish washer under Simple Plumbing Works, works a [handyman](/handyman) may carry out without a [PUB Licensed Plumber](/guides/regulation-pub-licensed-plumber).

**Too much detergent (third).** Too much detergent is the third cause, and it looks like a fault when it is actually an overload. Samsung's guidance on excessive suds names using the wrong detergent or too much of it as the cause, with error codes such as 5Ud, 5d or 5Ud5 typically indicating excessive sudsing rather than a mechanical fault.

## When to call, and who

Try the three checks above first: filter, hoses, detergent amount. Many "not working" calls turn out to be one of these, and none of them need a technician.

Call an [appliance repair](/appliance-repair) technician if the fault persists after those checks, if the machine leaks from inside the drum casing rather than from a hose, or if it makes a grinding or burning-smell noise during the spin cycle — those point to the motor, bearings or pump rather than something you can clear yourself.

## What it costs

Ask two or three for a written quote instead.

Give each technician the same description: the brand and rough age of the machine, the exact error code if there was one, and what you already tried (filter, hoses, detergent). A quote for "fix washing machine" with no symptom named is a guess, not a quote.

Ask whether the call-out fee is separate from the repair cost, whether it is waived if you proceed, and whether parts (a pump, a bearing, a hose) are quoted separately from labour.

## Who to call, and how to judge them

Appliance repair is not licensed work in Singapore, so there is no public register to check. Judge a technician on a written scope, a stated call-out fee and a business you can verify instead. An ACRA registration confirms the business exists, nothing more.

Prefer a technician who asks for the error code and what you have already checked before quoting, over one who quotes a flat repair fee sight-unseen.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why did my washing machine stop mid-cycle with an error code?**

A blocked drain filter or kinked drain tube is the most common cause of a machine that stops mid-cycle. Samsung's guidance on the 5C/5E drain error states that the most common reason for this error is a blocked filter or a kinked drain tube, and recommends ensuring that the filter and drain tube are cleared regularly to remove any blockages.

**Does a leaking washing machine always need a repair technician?**

A loose or damaged water hose is the second cause, and it shows up as a leak rather than a stopped cycle. Samsung's leak guidance says to check the water supply hoses in the back to make sure they're connected right and in good condition; a leak doesn't automatically mean the machine requires servicing.

**Can too much detergent make a washing machine seem broken?**

Too much detergent is the third cause, and it looks like a fault when it is actually an overload. Samsung's guidance on excessive suds names using the wrong detergent or too much of it as the cause, with error codes such as 5Ud, 5d or 5Ud5 typically indicating excessive sudsing rather than a mechanical fault.
