Start with the scope
PUB requires a Licensed Plumber for regulated water-service and sanitary plumbing work. It also publishes a list of simple jobs that can be done without that licence, including certain tap, hose and sanitary-fixture tasks. Check the actual job against PUB's plumbing guidance; a small-looking job is not automatically exempt.
Check the named plumber
- Follow PUB's official link to its licensed-plumber listings.
- Ask the provider for the responsible plumber's name and licence number.
- Match those details against the public listing and licence card.
- Confirm who will carry out or oversee your specific work.
- Ask PUB to clarify any unresolved mismatch before regulated work starts.
A business name may differ from the licensed individual's name. Ask for the connection rather than treating either a company registration or a similar name as confirmation.
Remember ACRA only confirms the business legally exists, it is not the PUB licence check above.
Ask before the visit
- Does this job fall within the regulated scope or the simple-works list?
- What is the attendance fee if I decline the repair?
- What parts and labour are included?
- Will you ask before extending the job or price?
- What warranty and invoice will I receive?
Compare written quotes
Give each provider the same description and photos where useful. Ask for the total, including any transport charge and applicable GST. If diagnosis changes the scope, request a revised quote before the extra work begins.
Compare plumbers and check the licence of the person responsible for your job.
