Sent my overlock sewing machine because the needle broke and the blade need to change. He charge me $45 for service, $19 for a packet of needles and $20 for blade. As just want to know if this fair deal but my machine is still not working as it should be.

Uncle came to my house to repair my singer sewing machine which was pretty old and left behind by my mum. He fixed it and gave me tips on how to maintain it. He is very knowledgeable and could tell what was wrong. I'm thankful that it is working fine now and I can continue to sew on it.

I sent my late grandmother's Singer 15 sewing machine here after reading positive reviews that highlighted transparent pricing, good service/attitude, and praises about Mr Tan's restoration skills. Unfortunately, all of these were not met in my case and I was left extremely disappointed and feeling defeated. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking to repair or restore a vintage sewing machine to good working condition, and regret not going to Guan Lee Long for restoration instead. Pricing: When I first visited and consulted Ms Chew for a quote with pictures, she reassured me that everything will be repaired nicely etc. and also ask her husband to give me a slight discount (probably since I'm younger). The quote she gave me was $550 (not inclusive of Mr Tan coming down for in-house consultation - additional $30), to which I agreed. Guan Lee Long quoted $650 for everything (inclusive of delivery), showed me which parts will be replaced + his amazing restoration of the lacquer on the machine itself etc. I still went ahead with Kim Yong Hua as Ms Chew promised that the original wood was of good quality and can be repaired by Mr Tan. Mr Tan quoted me $650 total during the consultation and I accepted it as the various pictures provided may not have reflected the extent of damage. When it was time for collection, he charged me $700 because his original quote didn't include delivery (which he failed to mention). Restoration: The end result of his repairs was depressing. Essential parts like the bobbin winder, feed dog, and tension discs were left rusty. This meant I either had to deal with rust getting on the threads being wound and fabric used, or disassemble the parts to remove rust myself. The repairs made to the wood were uneven with jagged edges and not uniformly varnished to the same colour (underside left unvarnished). When the sewing machine was being delivered, he had set the desk unit down from the transport trolley in the wrong direction even after showing him how I wanted the machine to be placed. To rectify this, he decided to drag the entire thing 180 degrees around which scratched the vinyl flooring (the OG wheels are not safe to vinyl and he knew this as I had mentioned in the shop prior to delivery). When two screw fell out of the desk, he told me to buy my own screws that were longer and fix it in the future. My mother insisted he fixed it as the table top was wobbly, and he just shoved a paper in-between the screw. Mr Tan also failed to secure the hanging portion under desk part initially and we had to provide our own elastics before he did. Also disliked how he stuck a sticker of his business to the wooden desk w/o asking for consent (had to remove the residue). Service/Attitude: Ms Chew's marketing point was that they provide warranty and demonstrate how to operate the machine. When Mr Tan was showing how to thread the needle, he asked for thread to do demonstration with. I passed him a spool of thread that came from those traditional sewing kits, to which he scoffed and remarked "You don't have nylon thread ah? How come you this you also don't know?" I felt frustrated throughout my interaction with Mr Tan as he did not repair the sewing machine or desk well enough to avoid the issues of function and stability. Not once did I ask for a timeframe or chased them for it, but I was presented with an extremely slip shod work within a one week of handing it over to them. Having seen the work of the other store, it's hard to not view this as a rip-off. I highly urge others who wish to repair their vintage sewing machine for actual use to patronise the other shop instead. For the amount paid, I could’ve had lesser hassle in figuring out how to clean things myself so that it would not affect the quality of my projects. To my understanding, I think this is the only shop that aims to preserve the original wood desk. If preservation of the vintage sewing machine and wooden desk (rust + wear and tear marks) for sentimental value outweighs the functionality aspect, then this would be the place for you.

It’s rare to find someone who truly loves his trade. Mr Tan carefully restored our old Singer machine handed down by my mother-in-law to good working order. Great service and honest pricing.

Very honest business, very transparent prices. They gave sound advice and were not pushy about repairs. Will recommend. But do check their opening hours before going down.

I took my old precious sewing machine to Mr Benjiman tan from kim yong hua shop. He repaired it perfectly for sgd 65. The famous Ban Soon sewing machine shop quoted 165++. This was the second time i went to Ban soon. Ban soon also mentioned I have to change parts and only they carry original parts etc etc. I was fed up as i had already spent 300 sgd on my machine at Ban Soon. I read the positive reviews about Kim Yong hua and took a chance and went to see Mr Benjamin Tan. Mr Tan repaired my machine with no change of parts. What was wonderful was Mr Tan's attitude and his ethics. Any day recommend Kim Yong Hua shop.

My mother wanted to restore an old Singer machine left behind by my late grandmother. They did a fantastic job with the restoration. We weren’t expecting the machine to still be able to work, just hoped to have it look nicer. Over the years the metal had all rusted up and some parts completely gone. They were willing to clean away the rust and even managed to find back original parts to replace those that need replacement. Other shops we went to weren’t willing to do so. In the end the machine can still sew and all the rust are gone, all the missing/damaged parts replaced. Extremely pleased with the job, they charged a very reasonable price for it too 👍🏼

The lady over at the store was very informative and provided me with ample amount of information on the various types of sewing machines that I was looking for. She recommended the best machine to purchase that was within my budget and told me to get a different model even though the initial model that I wanted to purchase was of a higher price. When it came to setting up the machine, they gave a very detailed demonstration on how to use and do a proper maintenance at home. Great efficient staff and top notch service !
