Locked out of your home in Singapore: what to do first, what it costs, who to call

Most lockouts are a jammed bolt, a broken key or a dead digital lock battery, not a broken door.

What to check first

Before you call anyone, work out which of the three situations you are in. Can a family member, a neighbour holding a spare, or your property agent get to a spare key faster than a locksmith can travel to you? A spare key is free; a locksmith is not. Tenants can contact their landlord, and condo or landed residents can check whether building or estate management holds a spare.

If the flat has a digital lock, check whether it has an external backup-power terminal or a socket for a 9V battery — a flat internal battery does not always mean the whole lock is dead. If the bolt will not slot or retract properly, stop forcing the key or handle: repeated force can turn a five-minute fix into a full lock replacement.

If someone inside is in immediate danger, contact emergency services rather than waiting for an ordinary locksmith appointment. An everyday lockout can wait for a firm quote; a safety emergency cannot.

The likely causes, in order

A jammed or worn bolt (most common). The most likely cause is a jammed or worn bolt. HDB's home care guide for gate and door issues covers exactly this: bolts that cannot slot or retract properly, which from outside looks and feels identical to a locked door that will not open. Safe check: try the key gently while lifting or pushing the door handle, since a bolt under tension will not retract even with the correct key.

A broken or bent key (second most common). The second most likely cause is a key that has broken off or bent inside the lock, so the mechanism cannot turn even with the right key in hand. This is a lock-cylinder problem, not a door problem, and no amount of force on the door itself will fix it. Safe check: look at the exposed part of the key — if it is shorter than your spare, the rest is still in the cylinder.

A dead or failed digital lock (third most common). The third cause is a digital or smart lock that has failed: a flat internal battery, a jammed motor, or a fingerprint or PIN sensor that has stopped responding. Most digital locks sold in Singapore carry an external backup-power terminal for exactly this situation. Safe check: touch a power bank or 9V battery to the lock's external terminals, if it has them, before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.

When to call, and who

Call a locksmith once you have ruled out a spare key and, for a digital lock, backup power. Tell them whether the lock is mechanical or digital, whether the key is lost or jammed, and whether the door is locked or physically stuck. A photo of the lock helps them bring the right tools, without you reading out an access code over the phone.

Do not force, pry or remove a fire-rated door closer to get back in. HDB states that all fire-rated doors at the entrance of HDB flats are installed with a door closer, a self-closing safety device that must not be removed, and forcing it can damage a fire safety feature you are required to keep working.

What it costs, day or night

Ask for a firm price over the phone before anyone travels to you, and confirm what you pay if they cannot get you in, or you decide not to go ahead.

Ask specifically: is the price for a non-destructive opening, or does it assume the lock will need to be drilled and replaced? The two are different jobs and bills, and a locksmith who will not commit to a number before arriving is the one most likely to change it at your door. Ask also for the attendance fee and any after-hours surcharge separately from the unlocking charge — a late-night callout commonly costs more, and published hours do not guarantee someone can attend right away.

Who to call, and how to judge them

Lockout work is not licensed in Singapore, so there is no public register to check a locksmith against. Judge one on a firm quoted price, a real business you can verify, and a willingness to ask you to prove the address is yours. An ACRA registration confirms the business exists, nothing more.

A locksmith should ask you to confirm you are the resident before opening anything, typically by checking ID against the address or a name on the letterbox. The Singapore Police Force's published advisory categories cover housebreaking as a serious property crime — exactly the scenario this check exists to rule out.

Keep the written quote and invoice, especially if the job was arranged quickly and at an odd hour. If the price or scope changes once the locksmith has inspected the lock, ask why before agreeing to the new total — pressure to accept unexplained extras is a reason to pause, not to hurry.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I get my key to turn even though it's the right key?

Locked out means you cannot get through your own front door: the key will not turn, the gate or door bolt has jammed, or you left your only key or fob inside. HDB's own guidance covers this under gate and door issues, including bolts that cannot slot or retract properly and difficulty opening or closing the door.
